This year, students in Mr.
Bardati’s Tech 9-12 class used their knowledge to design and build a
variety of original wood and/or metal projects such as band saw boxes,
lathe turnings, coffee tables, and metal creations.
Many students also
pitted their custom CO2 cars against each other in an elimination style
race.
Foods
The Foods program managed the Friday
lunch Program again this year. The class provided interesting and
inexpensive lunches every second week. Curried Vegetables and Rice, Asian
Noodle Stir Fry, Tuna Melts, Cheesy Quesadillas, Taco Salad, Quiche, Borscht
and Bread, Chicken Tortilla and Cornbread, Chicken Caesar Salad, Chicken
Coconut Soup, Stuffed Baked Potato, and Pizza Buns were some of the featured
dishes.
Students completed the Food Safe course and received their
certification. In addition, the class made healthy snacks for the school.
Great job, Foods crew!
Band
This year Ms. Lisa Lisee was
our Band teacher. The Jr. Band class focused on learning both concert
and jazz band classics.
A highlight was attending and performing at the
Music Festival in Nelson in April. We have some wonderfully talented
musicians in our school and hope that the Band program carries on next
year.
Desktop Publishing
The Desktop
Publishing class learns skills in the many software applications needed to
produce the school's yearbook. Students become skilled photographers, and
use photo enhancement software, as well as write text, to document the
events, activities and highlights of the school year. They learn skills in
graphic design and are inclusive of all the students in our K - 12 school.
The class
produces a top quality full-colour, hard-cover yearbook published each
June. There are 88 pages in all - each class, school staff, sports,
events and activities, fine arts - all these are included in the
yearbook.
It's a team
effort to meet our deadline and to create a high quality product, but
the course is also a fun hands-on learning experience with a fine
product at the end! Each student in the class is responsible for at
least one section of the yearbook.
Textiles
Students learned the basics of
clothing construction and chose 2 articles of clothing to make on the
sewing machine such as a hoodie, pajama pants, a skirt, or top.
A Christmas
stocking project involved patchwork, appliqué and embroidery work.
Outdoor Education
The
Outdoor Ed course, offers more in depth and extreme activities than the
regular PE program. Students learn many valuable skills, including map
reading, rope tying and usage, risk assessment, and what to do in emergency
situations. They mountain bike, hike, camp, and canoe.
Each student is certified in St. John Ambulance Emergency First Aid for
Schools. Students practice the Heimlich maneuver and study emergency scene
management, shock unconsciousness and fainting, choking, CPR, severe
bleeding, medical conditions, head spinal pelvic injuries, chest injuries,
burns, poison, bites and stings, heat and cold injury, emergency childbirth
and miscarriage.
The course is full of camp craft, outdoor skills, canoe skills and other
exciting outdoor adventures. See ya on the trails!!!
Visual Arts
Art class
is about painting and drawing, about mask-making and clay. Students in
this hands-on class, work on group murals as well as individual
projects. They study art from other eras and cultures, and play with
form and design. Some of the students' work is showcased here. A picture
is worth a thousand words...
Drama
Students in Drama
class practice acting by using scripts from web sites or making scripts by
themselves. Now, they are working on a project that includes filming their
acting. We expect to spend lots of time on the editing.
Writing
Lucerne has a strong Writing program with many
talented young writers. The class launches anew each fall and students are
encouraged to write poetry, short fiction, memoir and even screenplays.
A highlight of the class is the annual field trip to Banff and Calgary for
WordFest each October. At this annual Writers Festival of national and
international writers, the class attends readings and writing workshops with
inspiring writer professionals. Each year we buy books from our favourite
WordFest authors, get them signed for the school, and add them to the
collection of "signed by the author" titles of poetry and fiction in our
school library.
Other Writing Class rituals include the annual Writing Class Coffeehouse
held at the Silverton Gallery and publishing our work to our online ezine at
http://ezine.bcelearner.ca.
Fresh young voices, talented wordsmiths, our
Lucerne Writers are hot!
