Multi-graded classrooms:
Most of our courses are
multi-graded. In some courses such as Math and Science, the curriculum
is separate for each grade level; in some courses such as English,
students are able to work at a range of levels within a multi-graded
classroom. Our teachers are talented at adapting to the individual needs
of students.
Small Class Size:
Most of our class sizes are
relatively small when compared to our urban counterparts. Our largest
classes have 27 students in them and many other classes maintain sizes
of 12 - 20. As a result, students get lots of individual attention.
Help
for Students with Learning Disabilities and Special Needs:
We offer strong support to
students who need extra help with super Special Education Assistants in
the classrooms, and the services of our Learning Assistance and Special
Ed teacher. In addition, our teaching staff is well versed in strategies
to help learners with challenges to be successful in the regular
classroom.
High
Quality Academic Programs:
Our academic standards are
high at Lucerne. Our students score above the district and provincial
averages in virtually every class we offer. Our teachers are well
trained in current educational research and offer after school and lunch
hour tutorial times to all students. We are very proud that Lucerne
graduates have won the most prestigious scholarships in Canada, and have
their choice of post - secondary options after they graduate from our
small but mighty rural school!
Our Facilitated Learning Centre:
Online, Virtual School,
Nautikos, Cool School, DESK, Selkirk College Transitions courses -- we
have them all:
Some of our senior classes are offered through our Facilitated Learning
Centre. For example, three of our 2007 students will take Drafting 11 or
12 as a Nautikos course and two students are enrolled in Physics 12
online through Cool School. Two students will take Psychology 100 online
through Selkirk College, while four others will study Spanish 102 online
through Selkirk. Two students will take Math 11 Essentials in the FLC,
while another student will complete his Forestry 11 course in Nautikos,
and yet another works on German 11 through DESK. We are partnering with
SD 23 this year to offer even more Virtual School classes between our
school district, and Vernon and Lumby.
No matter what course the
student needs, we can find a way to offer it!!!
Student Focused Individual Learning Plans:
As part of our School Growth
Plan, all students K - 12 collect evidence of their learning, set goals
based on their achievement in Literacy, Numeracy and Social
Responsibility, and present their learning and their goals to their
parents at Student Led conferences in November and in April. We believe
that students are more engaged in their progress when they also have
ownership of their learning, and are there to assist our learners to
achieve their personal best.
Elective Options:
From Grade 8 on, students
choose from a range of elective courses including Foods, Textiles, Shop,
Writing, Navigator, Desktop Publishing, Outdoor Education, and Fitness.

Fall and Spring into Learning Credits:
Each September and May we
offer 4 day "immersion weeks". These mini courses allow students to
experience high quality instruction in elective areas on top of our
regular timetable. With Into Learnings in the arts, applied skills, and
outdoor activities, students gain more choices and have fun experiential
learning too.

information and photos.
In the Fall of 2007, we will offer students these 1 credit elective
courses in Martial Arts, in Rock Climbing at Skaha Lake in Penticton, in
Black and White and Digital Photography, and in Latin Dance Classes.
Work
Experience Programs:
All our Grade 11 and 12
students participate in two one week work experience placements in
career fields of their choice. All across the province and into Alberta,
our students pursue their career dreams and check out what they 'want to
do when they grow up'. Students participate in terrific work placements
in marine biology at the Vancouver Aquarium, at hair salons in Nelson,
in Autobody Repair in Nakusp, as Dental Assistants in Silverton, and
check out post-secondary programs like med school at UBC, Computer
Science at SFU, or Carpentry at Selkirk College.
Parents and students agree that Lucerne's work experience helps with
learning of post - secondary options in a meaningful and relevant way.
