Innovative Programs:

Spring & Fall Into Learning

Every year our school offers special programs:

Spring Into Learning, and Fall Into Learning.

From Pottery to Multicultural Cooking, from Alpine Hiking to Hip Hop Dance, our into Learnings are a hit with students and teachers alike! Each fall and spring we offer four or five new opportunities for learning outside of the regular classroom. Relevant, rich, and steeped in passion for learning across the fine arts, applied skills and outdoor education areas, our into Learnings make Lucerne school rock!!!

Roots of Empathy

Click here to view more photosEmpathy means understanding how people feel. With facilitator, Lane Haywood and a local baby and mother, the Grade 1/2 class had a terrific year watching "their" baby grow and learning how others feel.
The Roots of Empathy's program goals include fostering the development of empathy; reducing levels of bullying, aggression and violence in childrens' lives; building peaceful societies; preparing students for responsive parenting; and increasing knowledge of human development and infant safety.

The program, developed by Canadian social advocate, Mary Gordon, is used widely throughout Canada at a variety of grade levels.
Each month, Lane, the Roots of Empathy instructor, prepared the class for the visit of a baby and his/her mother. Themes include Crying (why does the baby cry? and how we can help her?), Sleep, Communication, Safety and Who Am I? (focusing on the Grade 12 students' and others' individuality). Themes are designed to help students gain understanding of their own world as well as the baby's. The baby's visit was eagerly anticipated by the class, who observed her development throughout the year. What fun!

Grade 5/6 Outdoor Education

This year was full of exciting adventures for Katrina’s Grade 5-6 Outdoor Ed class. The class skied, snow shoed, camped at Whatshan Lake, hiked, biked, and paddled. Many of the outdoor expeditions were in partnership with the Burton School Outdoor Education students. It was a terrific year filled with lifelong memories and many a Kodak moment! Thanks to Katrina and all the parent volunteers for all of their hard work.

Arts Festival

The Arts Festival took place during the week of April 23-27 at the Silverton Gallery. Community artists taught Lucerne students their various specialties. The artists included Virginia Boyd, Kaitlan Murphy, Jeremy Downs, Mary Fulkco and Karen Forsyth who taught photography, pottery, car painting, and fly tying, respectively, to high school students. Elementary workshops with artists Donna Hicks, Anita Dumis, Penelope Stuart, Betty Fahlman, Eloise Charet, Elly Scheepens also made this festival a resounding success.

Writers Festival

Click here to view more photosAs the marvelous Arts Festival event emerged this year, our annual Writers Festival shifted its format into two week long Writing residencies — one with Katrina’s Grade 5/6 class and the 5/6's from Burton School, and the other with teen writers in our Spring into Learning week. Stuart Ross was a brilliant writing mentor for all the students, regardless of age. The 5/6 class created their own poetry books, while the high school writers published their work to an online ezine and read at a community coffeehouse.

One-to-One Reading

Each week a crew of enthusiastic literacy volunteers participated in the One to One Reading program. This year both adults and teens were One to One tutors. Thanks to Charlene Alexander for her terrific co-ordination of this program.

Homework Club

Another excellent literacy initiative based in the school was the homework club under the direction of Lila Strand. The club met once a week to complete their work and eat healthy snacks.
